Biography

John Henry Schaffer is the son of Justus Heinrich Schafer and his second wife Sussana Agnes (Seibel) Shaffer.

Born on January 17, 1712, he was baptized "Johann Henrich" on January 27, 1712 the son of "Jost Henrich and Schaster, Agnes." The witnesses to his baptism were Joh: Ritzbackus and Elisabeth Jungin. The baptism was recorded in the records of the Baptisms at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Camp, New York. 1708-1711 [1] and is part of the collection of Colonial New York Church Records: Southern New York Church Records Of Churches Organized Before 1788, in the present counties of Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Ulster, Sullivan and Westchester in New York; Hudson County in New Jersey, 1660 which may be found here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nycoloni/dchsouth.html


Henry married Maria Elizabeth Barringer, daughter of Conrad Berringer and Anna Elisabetha (Stahl) Berringer. Maria had previously been married to Henry Shever. No children were born to her first marriage. Named Maria Elisabeth Berringer in daughter Anna Maria’s record.

  • Elisabetha, born November 19, 1736 at Rhinebeck
  • Jacob, baptized April 29, 1739 at Rhinebeck
  • Anna Maria, baptized January 4, 1741 at Kingston.

Researchers Notes

Henry's father, Justus / Jost Heinrich named as many as six of his sons John or Johann with unique middle names. The middle name would be the name commonly used to differentiate between them
