John H. Schamp's headstone states that he died on 9 March 1861 at the age of 65 years, 1 month, and 25 days. This is how I arrived at his DOB. [1]

1840 Federal Census (Mansfield, Warren, New Jersey): John H. Schamp 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50. 1 female under 5, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 40-50.[2]

1850 Federal Census (Mendham, Morris, New Jersey, United States):

Household Gender Age Birthplace
John Schamp M 59 New Jersey
Mary Schamp M 53 New Jersey
Sarah Rachel Schamp F 24 New Jersey
Margaret Schamp F 22 New Jersey
John Schamp F 25 New Jersey
Ursala Schamp M 13 New Jersey[3] (NOTE: FamilySearch indexing has interpreted John Sr.'s age as 59, Ancestry.com's indexing has interpreted it as 52, which makes the most sense.)

1860 Federal Census (Mansfield, Warren, New Jersey, United States):

Household Gender Age Birthplace
John H Schamp M 63 New Jersey
Iricilla Schamp F 22 New Jersey
Mary Schamp F 9 New Jersey[4]

Note

Two profiles for John H Schamp were created originally. One John H Schamp was noted in genealogical files on FamilySearch to be the son of Henry G and Margaret Schamp. His birthdate was listed as about 1803 and his death being after 1858. The other John H Schamp was created when tracing the ancestors of Bruce Schamp. The most distance male ancestor noted was John H. Schamp that died in 1861. His birthdate was believed to be in 1797 based on his headstone. The areas in which both John H's were believed to live in Hunterdon, Warren, or Morris counties. The towns were no greater than 20 miles from one another in a triangle (see attached photo). A search of the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census records did not support two John Schamps having existed in those three counties with a birth year between 1790 and 1810. Therefore, I think the greater preponderance of the evidence supports that they are the same individual.Norman-1065 21:43, 8 April 2016 (EDT)
