Joseph Schrenk was born 17 August 1832 in Wurttemberg, Germany.
He immigrated to North America probably about 1853, however it is not certain whether he came first to Canada or to the United States. The surname spelling 'Shrenk' probably was conferred in context of his move to an Anglophone geography in either case, however it was recorded intermittently as Schrenk, or Schrenck.
The Joseph Shrenk family was doubly counted the 1870 U.S. census of New York City, ward 17, first on 22 June [1], second on 24 December [2]. In both sets of records, Joseph Schrenk was head of household, with spouse Mary (or Maria, nee probably Nelson, from either Ireland or England), with the same list of children, their age differences between the two records accounting for their intervening birthdays:
In both sets of 1870 census records, Joseph Schrenk is listed as carpenter or cabinet maker.
By 1881, this family had relocated to Mornington (Perth Township), Ontario, Canada, where Joseph was listed as a farmer [3]. In the Ontario census, the same spouse and children appear with ages coinciding with the New York City records. The following later born children also are listed, born in Ontario:
Joseph Schrenk died 21 December 1912 in Mornington, Ontario [5]. His grave is in Greenwood Cemetery-Milverton, marked by a stone shared with his wife [6].
