Mary was a daughter of Walter B. Schermerhorn and Catherine C. Kimmey of East Greenbush, New York.
The 1875 New York State Census recorded Mary in her parents' household in East Greenbush, Election District 1, Rensselaer County, New York. Her father Walter B. Schermerhorn was 53 years old, born in Rensselaer County, a farmer and a landowner. Others in the household were Kate C Schermerhorn 47, his wife, born in Albany County, and their daughters, all born in Rensselaer County: Elizabeth C Schermerhorn, 14, Jessie W Schermerhorn, 11, Sarah Schermerhorn, 8, and Mary Schermerhorn, 4; Walter's sister, Mary S Schermerhorn, 46, born in Rensselaer County; and two family employees born in Ireland John Hayes, 45, a laborer, and his wife Bridget Hayes, 30, a servant.[1]
The 1880 U.S. Census recorded Mary in the household of 58-year-old farmer W. B. Schermerhorn in East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York and wife Kate C. Schermerhorn, 51. Their daughters were Libbie C. Schermerhorn, 19, Jessie W. Schermerhorn, 16, Sarah Schermerhorn, 13, and Mary B. Schermerhorn, 9. Also in the household were cousin Kate Schermerhorn, 49, and two laborers, Edw Anderson, 20, and Wm Anderson, 17. All were born in New York of New York-born parents except for the Andersons, who were born in New York of Irish parents.[2]
According to the 1940 U.S. Census, Mary completed two years of high school.[3]
William Schuyler Staats and Mary Bailey Schermerhorn married on 28 December 1893 in the Greenbush Reformed Church.[4]
The 1900 U.S. Census recorded 31-year-old William Staats (born May 1869) and his 29-year-old wife Mary Staats (born September 1870) in East Greenbush, New York. They had been married 6 years and were renting their home. Both were natives of New York whose parents were born in New York. William was a flour dealer. Mary had had no children. The adjacent listing, apparently for a second apartment in the same building, was for Philip Staats, age 29 (born December 1870) and also a flour dealer, his wife Jennie Staats, 30 (born July 1869), and Philip's mother-in-law Margaret Elliot, age 66 and a widow. Philip and Jennie had been married 5 years and Jennie had no children.[5]
The 1905 New York State Census recorded 36-year-old William S Stauts and his 34-year-old wife Mary B Stauts living at 12 River Side Avenue in the 9th ward of the City of Rensselaer, New York, with their daughter 4-year-old Elizabeth Stauts. William was a feed merchant. A separate household at the same address was that of 34-year-old Philip E Stauts, occupation Partner, his 35-year-old wife Jennie, and their year-old son Philip G. [6]
The 1910 U.S. Census recorded 41-year-old William S. Staats and his 39-year-old wife Mary B. Staats in the 9th ward of the city of Rensselaer, New York, with their 9-year-old daughter Elizabeth S. Staats. All were born in New York to parents born in New York. William and Mary Staats had been married 17 years and Mary had had one child, who was living. William was a merchant in the Flour & Feed industry.[7]
William S. Staats died on 19 August 1910 from injuries in an automobile accident.[8] Mary survived him as his widow.
In April 1930 the 1930 U.S. Census recorded her in the household of her daughter and son-in-law. John I. Schell, age 31, was living at 25 Riverside Avenue in the City of Rensselaer, New York, with wife Elizabeth, 29; children Russel S., 3, and Joan, 5 months; and mother-in-law Mary B Staats, age 59 and a widow. All were born in New York to parents born in New York. John was proprietor of a fur shop and was a U.S. military veteran, having served in the World War.[9]
The 1940 U.S. Census recorded Mary Staats, 69 years old and a widow, in the household of John Schull, age 48, and his 39-year-old wife Elizabeth Schull, both furriers, in ward 9 of the City of Rensselaer, New York. She was identified as John Schull's mother-in-law. Others in the household were children son Russell Schull, 13, and Joan Schull, 10. All were natives of New York and had lived in the same house in 1940.[3]
Mary B. Schermerhorn Staats died on 19 November 1950 and is buried in East Greenbush Cemtetery, East Greenbush, New York. The gravestone insrcription identifies her as Mary B. Schermerhorn, wife of William Staats, and gives her life dates as 1870-1950.[10]
