Biography

Barent Schermerhorn was baptized May 17, 1725, in Albany, New York. He was a son of Ryer Schermerhorn and Geertje Ten Eyck.[1]

He married Alletaka Konyn aka Conyn in Albany in 1750. Their children were: [1]

  1. Garentjen, baptized Oct. 11, 1750, in Linlithgo.
  2. Gerritje, born Dec. 4, 1751; baptized in Rhinebeck; married Jacob Schermerhorn (son of Jacob J. Schermerhorn and Cathalyntje Van Buren)
  3. Hendrikje, born Jan. 13, 1754; baptized in Rhinebeck; married Jacobus Moll of Schodack.
  4. Ryer B., baptized March 28, 1756, in Rhinebeck; married Maritje D. Beevers.
  5. Leendert, born Oct. 12, 1758; baptized in Rhinebeck; married Mary Doty.
  6. Levinus, baptized Nov. 25, 1771, in Schodack.

Alletaka died, and on 6 January 1776 Barent Schermerhoorn, widower, married Geertruy Vroman as his second wife in Kinderhook, New York.[2] They had no children.[1]

As an adult, Barent lived in Rhinebeck, N. Y., until some time after 1758. He probably lived at Schodack, N.Y., for a period after 1758. In 1767 his name was on the muster roll of Capt. Jochum Staats' Company of Rensselaerwyck Militia. At the time of his second marriage in 1776, he was a resident of Coeymans, Albany County, N. Y.[1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Barent by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Barent:

Schermerhorn-398 and Schermerhorn-143 appear to represent the same person because: Consistent data, and I just merged the two profiles for his wife.

Schermerhorn-195 and Schermerhorn-143 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. No conflicts to prevent a merge.

However, I believe the death date of 1776 given on Schermerhorn-195 is wrong. That's the date of his second marriage, as indicated in the bio on Schermerhorn-143.

Hi Ellen: I also have Barent Schermerhorn (Schermhorn-195). I would like to merge him into your Barent Schermerhorn (Schermhorn-143) and collaborate on the profile, if you don't mind. Thanks, Kent
