Arnout was a son of Symon Jacobse Schermerhorn and Willemtje Viele.[1]
In 1690, the family was living in Schenectady. On February 9, 1690, the family were victims of a French and Indian attack at Schenectady known as the Schenectady Massacre. Arnout's brother Johannes was killed in the attack. According to family tradition, after being shot through the thigh, Simon Schermerhorn escaped on a wounded horse and rode through the night to Albany, warning inhabitants along the way. He arrived in Albany at 5 a.m., "more dead than alive", becoming the first person to bring news of the attack. His wife Willemtje and son Arnout, Simon's brother Cornelius and his sister Jannetie (the brother and sister probably lived with him) also escaped. Circumstances of their escape are not recorded, but tradition states that 4-year-old Arnout was wrapped up in a blanket by his father and cast in a snowdrift for safety. [1]
Arnout Schermerhorn traded in New York City real estate.[1]
