Biography of Augusta Bertha "Bertha A." SCHIRCK HERRMANN of 1882

Bertha A. Schirck was born on August 12, 1882 on Yankee Bush Hill, Conewango Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania. Bertha was the child of Michael Schirck and Marie Theresa Kopp.

Bertha A. Schirck married Joseph G. Herrmann in Dunkirk, New York on July 15, 1900.

Bertha A. Schirck Herrmann and her husband Joseph G. Herrmann are listed on the 1905 New York State Census for Dunkirk, New York, living with their daughter Mary Herrmann, age 3, on June 1, 1905. Their second child, Joseph would be born a month later, on July 6, 1905. Joseph was working as a boiler maker and Bertha was at home with their daughter and pregnant with their first son Joseph Herrmann, III.

Bertha A. Schirck Herrmann and Joe bought a farm in Conneaut, Ohio before 1910. They are listed on the 1910 United States Federal Census for Conneaut, Ohio.

Bertha Schirck Herrmann and Joe had five children:

  1. Mary Herrmann, born 1901
  2. Joseph M. Herrmann, born June 1904
  3. Raymond Herrmann, born November 18, 1905
  4. Francis J. Herrmann (Herman), born December 25, 1907
  5. Margaret Herrmann Parke, born November 25, 1919.

Bertha Schirck was a farmer's wife. She kept a garden, small farm animals and berry bushes. She canned food for the winter in glass Mason and Bell jars, made clothing from fancy flour sacks, and made jams and jellies from blackberries.

Bertha Schirck and her husband Joseph "Joe" Herrmann celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and had their pictures in the local paper on August 13, 1950, a few weeks after their actual anniversary.

Bertha Schirck and her husband Joseph "Joe" Herrmann both passed away in 1964. Joe died in June and Bertha died on August 6, 1964. They are buried together in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio. A picture of their headstone is available on Find A Grave.
