Bertha Maria Schmidt, born 8 March of 1890, was the daughter of Metta Hoeft and Andreas Schmidt. Metta and Andreas had settled in Green Valley township of Solano County in California, where many immigrants from Germany were becoming successful fruit ranchers.[1]
She never married or left the home of her parents. A cousin from Germany, Catherine Ahrens, came to live with them in 1926, and was Bertha’s companion for the rest of their lives. She worked for the Post Office in Suisun City for most of her adult years, advancing to Assistant Post Master by 1940.[2] Bertha died on 6th of June 1974.[3]
