Obituary

Walter Schmidt, 95, South Kansas City, Missouri passed away 8:35 a.m., Thursday, September 22, 2005, at the Beautiful Savior Nursing Home, Belton, MO. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2005 at St. Thomas More Church, 11822 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, 64131. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Sunday, September 25, 2005 with the rosary at 7:30pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Midwest Foster Care Adoption Association (MFCAA), 8511 E. 21st Street, Kansas City, MO 64126. Mr. Schmidt was born in Ellis County, Kansas on August 24, 1910 to George Schmidt and Pauline (Miller) Schmidt. He graduated from Hays High School, attended Fort Hays State University and completed a correspondence course offered by LaSalle Extension University of Chicago. He married Louise M. Pivonka in LaCrosse, Kansas May 22, 1939, where he was manager of the local rural petroleum cooperative at the time. Mr. Schmidt was a life-member of the Missouri and the National Societies of Certified Public Accountants and the Knights of Columbus. His autobiography was published in 1987. In 1946 the Schmidt's moved to Kansas City, Missouri where Walt had accepted employment with CCA, now Farmland Industries, Inc. as auditor in the managed stations division. Later he assumed the position of staff assistant to the Director of Manufacturing and finally as staff assistant to the Controller. In 1952 he terminated his employment with Farmland Industries, Inc, to open his CPA office in Kansas City, Missouri. At the time the federal government decided to ask CPA's to audit their REA borrowers and many of them chose Walter G. Schmidt, CPA as their auditor. Eventually it became his specialty and his firm performed more Rural Electric Audits than any firm in the country. The partnership was formed in 1963 with Paul Schmidt (unrelated) under the name of Schmidt and Company, Certified Public Accountants. Paul incorporated his portion of the firm in 1984. Roger Schmidt is the managing partner of the firm at its present headquarter in Blue Springs, Missouri. Mr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Louise, four brothers; Bernard, Henry, Cyril and Gilbert, four sisters: Regina, Elizabeth, Marie and Eleanore. Survivors include three daughters, Paula K. Duke of the home, Anita L. West, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Nancy E. Matzelle of the home, a brother Raymond Schmidt, Lawrence, Kansas, five grandchildren; Loretta Ross, Blue Springs, Missouri, Karen L. Duke, Kansas City, Missouri, Pat West, Mansfield, Texas, James West, Chandler, Texas, Eric Matzelle, Kansas City, Missouri and many great grandchildren.
