Katie Schmidt was the daughter of John and Katie Miller Schmidt. She came with her family from Germany to Marble Rock, Iowa, at the age of ten. [1]
She was living in Waverly, Iowa, when she met Charlie Harrison. They were married in Waverly when she was about 26.[2] They are the parents of three daughters.
They moved to Appleton, Minnesota, in 1907 when Charlie purchased the Evergreen Farm on the edge of Appleton, near the Swift County fairgrounds.[3]
Katherine may have been struck by lightening on the porch of her home in 1918. She was watching an approaching storm when she suddenly found herself on the ground near the porch. She suffered serious injuries including two broken bones.[4]
After Charlie died in 1949, their daughter Mary came to live with her mother on the farm. They sold the farm a year later, and Katie and Mary moved to St. Paul.
Katie died at the age of 87. She is buried with her husband in Appleton Cemetery.[5]
A 1885 Iowa State Census appears to show Katie's family. Her daughter said the family settled in Marble Rock, Iowa. Ulster Township is nearby, north of Marble Rock. [6] Katie's birth year varies in various records.
