Not sure if the following deeds are for this Michael or for one of his relatives. Tom Bowen relates I believe the deeds probably refer to Michael Smith, son of Nicholas, who married Rosanna Yager in July 1791. He was born about 1756. The cousins seemed to remain close to John Michael Smith. In answer to the identity of Michael Smith with deeds in Culpeper Co. in 1778, 1782, 1789 and 1791, I believe that he was the son of Nicholas, who was the son of Mathias, who was the brother of John Michael Smith Sr. This Michael went to Oldham Co. Ky. where he died between 1820 and 1832. Matthias Smith and his family are covered in a detailed article, DESCENDANTS OF MATTHEW SMITH, THE 1717 COLONIST, by B. C. Holtzclaw, which appeared in John Blankenbaker's BEYOND GERMANNA, v. 3, n. 6, p. 175. Matthias also had a son Matthias who had a son Michael born about 1760, but apparently less is known about him. Tom Bowen

18 April 1778, DB H-656, Michael (MS) & Elisabeth (x) Smith his wife of Culpeper Co. to Nicholas Smith Jr. of same for £202, 118 acres in Bromfield Parish beginning at two red oaks thence north to the beginning [is there more?]. witnesses Thomas Barbour, Thoms Clayton, George (+) Chrisler. Whereas Elisabeth could not travel to Court, James Barbour and William Walker went to Elisabeth and examined her.

DB L page 230 Sept 15, 1782 Solomon and Elizabeth Yeager to Michael Smith for 40 pounds being 100 acres corner Zachariah Blankenbaker, Witness James Barbour, William Walter, Samuel Major Sr, Francis Major

DB Q pg 13 June 15, 1789 Adam and Juriah Yeager to Michael Smith for 50 pounds, being 134 acres line of Chapman on Dark Run dividing corner between John Adam Yeager and Nathanial Yeager

DB Q page 18 January 17, 1791 Michael Smith to John Blankenbaker for 70 pounds being 78 acres on Robinson Fork joining lands of Zachary Blankenabker, Elias Chrisler and John Yeager.

In the period of about 1782 to 22 May, 1785, when he was told his services were no longer wanted, a J. Michael Schmidt was hired as "volunteer Preacher" to the German Lutheran Church in Culpeper/Madison, later called Hebron. He was presumed to be this Michael Smith, the question discussed in "Who Was J. Michael Schmidt," by John Blankenbaker in Beyond Germanna, v. 15, n. 2 (2003). One reason advanced in favor of his being this man was that, at his first recorded communion and confirmation service, on 17 Nov. 1782, almost all of this Michael Smith's relatives who were still in the area attended the service. The church books during the time he was associated with the church are in a messy state, suggesting a man of limited education. He did serve other locations, in the Shenandoah Valley, where there are references to him, but the extent is not known.
