Carl Reinhold Ewald Schmidt was born 20 Apr 1864 in Berlin, Prussia to parents Carl Friedrich Eduard Schmidt and Bertha Maria Carius. [1] It was common for German ancestors to use their middle name, so Carl was known as Ewald to friends and family and many times that is the way it is recorded on documents. His grave marker even uses the name "Ewald".

When Ewald was born in 1864, Brandenburg was one of the provinces of Prussia, and Berlin was it's capital, and there was no modern Germany as we know it.

In May 1892, according to US citizenship petition and naturalization papers , Ewald immigrated to Boston, from the city of Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany and was naturalized from 1897 to 1900. [2]

We do not know the actual reason Ewald left Germany or why he landed in Boston, but many men went to America to escape being drafted into the Kaiser's army. Actual immigration records and ship manifest have not been located at this time. Family lore has it that Ewald came over on a ship as part of the crew. [3]

On 25 Oct 1893 Ewald obtained a marriage license from Lackawanna County and the following day, 26 Oct 1893, Ewald married Pauline Gasier at St John's Lutheran Church in Scranton, Pennsylvania . Pauline was also an immigrant from Germany. Their marriage was recorded at Lackawanna County. [4]

Ewald and Pauline raised their family of nine children on Meadow Lane in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was a day laborer according to 1900 US census and a carpenter in 1910 and 1920 census. [5]

On 16 Mar 1922 his wife Pauline passed away.

In the 1930 US Census, Ewald was still living in Scranton, PA and employed as a cabinet maker. He had two sons and some in-laws living with him at the time. [5]

In the 1940 US Census he was living with his daughter Bertha, in Newark, New Jersey. [5]

On 22 Sep 1946, Ewald was living in Newark, New Jersey when he passed away. He was buried in Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania on 26 Sep 1946 with his wife Pauline and other relatives. [6]
