Biography

Resided in an unknown city,[1] in Canton Berne.

As during the time of his forefathers, the Bern region still wages oppression campaigns against Anabaptists.[2] Unable to find any evidence whether this Peter was an Anabaptist or not, although it is clear that his descendants eventually are.

Research Notes

I, David Snyder 11168, have altered some of the original data and notes based on an analysis of the various sources. This analysis was kindly verified and endorsed by Mr. Gerald Baraboo. Here is a summary posted on 15 October 2019 (all websites accessed 13, 14, or 15 October 2019):

1. Schneider Family Bible - good. Not a true primary source but close to it. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Common_Sources%2C_Descendants_of_Hannes_Schneider_born_1534 for more information.

2. Tale of Two Families - John Brown and Abbe Lavina Colaw, 2019, by Diana J Muir – unknown quality. The details seem to be very specific and precise compared to the Family Bible, but I have access only to a partial online version, not the full book, so I am not sure what the sources are. I contacted the author who was at first receptive to questions, but unfortunately did not respond when I asked for a source after demonstrating some inconsistencies between the Family Bible and her information. I shall have to wait until a used or library copy of the book becomes available because I don’t want to spend the~ $75 to get a new one at the moment. https://books.google.ca/books?id=-bekDwAAQBAJ&pg=PR1&lpg=PR1&dq=tale+of+two+families+-+john+brown+and+abbe+lavina+colaw&source=bl&ots=-GbL8LlK5l&sig=ACfU3U1e85eNyabIWNHjEP8YJHc2fvuP1g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjI_bLDua7kAhWOX8AKHbX-CsUQ6AEwAXoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=tale%20of%20two%20families%20-%20john%20brown%20and%20abbe%20lavina%20colaw&f=false

3. Schneider/Snyder Family, short paper by Bittenger, 2015 – not original. The very brief listing of “the older generations” of Schneiders summarises the information from the Family Bible exactly from 1534 to Johannes in 1697. The source provided by him is the Mennonite Family History, July 1993 edition. There is no original research here to help resolve this specific profile mystery. https://bittingergenealogicalresearch.files.wordpress.com/2015/07/schneidersnyderfamily.pdf

4. Find A Grave (FaG), April 2018 - suspect. There are four entries of immediate relevance: Johan Peter https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/188485701/johan-peter-schneider Hans (father) https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/188485233/hans-schneider Barbil (mother) https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/188485124/barbil-schneider Susanna (wife) https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/188485877/susanna-schneider There are obvious typos, including on Hans’ profile his being married shortly following his death! The information is consistent from one family member to the next. There are also obvious discrepancies between the FaG information and the sources described above, which is confusing since there are also convincing matches. There is much discussion on G2G about using FaG memorials as sources. I sent an enquiry to the FaG profile Creator asking about sources to which he responded with some incomplete references to German church registers that had no relevance to the members in question. I sent an observation outlining the similarities and differences between our information and asked for enhanced sources but never heard back from him.

5. Geni.com, May 2018 – unknown quality. The reference is given as My Heritage Family Trees which is a paid site. https://www.geni.com/people/Peter-Schneider/6000000007709514343

6. Timothy Easterday Family Tree.ged, Nikolaus Arsenius thiel.ged. These imported GEDCOMs are not sourced - poor. I attempted to contact Profile Manager Timothy Easterday on 28 August 2019 to see where his information came from. No response.

7. Deutschland Gerburten und Taufen, 1558-1898, Family Search - poor. The link provided in the public comment of 29 August 2019 does not lead to the correct family. However, a further investigation of Family Search using various Swiss databases provides information that is from Find a Grave, not actual records. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VHQM-CRQ

8. Joe Payne Family Group Sheet - poor. Just a list, no sources provided. http://joepayne.org/pedigree/f1253.htm

9. I have investigated the State Archives for Canton Bern, regions Signau. Lauperswill, and Langnau church registers. Most of the records of that time period are for baptisms, and Mennonites would not have baptised their children. Regardless, I looked for baptisms, marriages, and deaths for all Schneiders in the appropriate years but found nothing except the marriage record between Hans Schnyder and Barbli Staufer. Either they are not recognisable due to the difficult-to-read script or poor quality reproduction on some pages, or the records exist in other areas of Canton Bern besides Signau, Lauperswill, or Langnau. I am not willing to search every part of Berne at this time. https://www.query.sta.be.ch/archivplansuche.aspx?ID=37 , look under “Kirchenbucher” or “Church Books”

Sources

  1. There is an error in identifying the city in which Peter (1590 - 1663) lived and where his son Jacob (1624 - 1695) was born. The English translation says "Peter Schneider son of Jacob Schneider (2) resided in the city Lucerne, Canton Berne . . ." and later ". . . Jacob Schneider (4) was born in Lucerne, Switzerland June 13th . . ." However, Lucern is not nor ever was in Canton Berne. Upon checking the actual German script, the town name is unable to be read clearly but it is definately not "Lucerne". It could be "Lauperswill" or Langnau" - both regions in Canton Bern, but I am not sure.

Hello again Mr. Baraboo. I am sending you a personal e-mail with attachment to explain what I would like to do with this profile. Still no response from Mr. Easterday, the other Profile Manager. I would be interested in hearing your views prior to making major changes to this page.

I'm in the process of hunting down further explanations on some of the sources stated on the profile here and profile comments below. Will take some time, probably until end of October 2019. In the meantime, I think this is Peter Schneider, father of Jacob Schneider 8560, but much of the information is incorrect which I suspect is the result of an ealier unwarrented merge. I have a summary in table format but was unable to post on the profile.

To add to the challenge .. I found multiple records of "Barbara Schindler" during the same time and place being married to 3-4 different persons. "Johann Peter Schneider" is a popular name during that time and in the same locations. The information found on "FamilySearch" appear to be translated from original records.

C'est Bon ..

The more I look into this, the more confusing it becomes with seemingly conflicting sources of differing qualities. It will definitely take some time to sort out. A key reference seems to be the very detailed Schneider family tree of this time period found in Tale of Two Families &c by Muir as stated first under sources of this profile. Partial e-book at https://books.google.ca/books?id=-bekDwAAQBAJ&pg=PR1&lpg=PR1&dq=tale+of+two+families+-+john+brown+and+abbe+lavina+colaw&source=bl&ots=-GbL8LlK5l&sig=ACfU3U1e85eNyabIWNHjEP8YJHc2fvuP1g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjI_bLDua7kAhWOX8AKHbX-CsUQ6AEwAXoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=tale%20of%20two%20families%20-%20john%20brown%20and%20abbe%20lavina%20colaw&f=false . I would love to know how they know this information, but no sources are visible in this partial version. Does anybody have a hard copy?

David .. I've made edits and added information .. However there is a record that needs your review.

"Deutschland Geburten und Taufen, 1558-1898," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VHQM-CRQ : 11 February 2018), Barbara Schindelin in entry for Hanss Jacob Schneider, 17 May 1662; citing ; FHL microfilm 1,189,314.

This may have been information that was part of the imported gedcom .. ? What do you think ?

Greetings .. Thank you for your communication David.

You have asked pertinent questions. Although I am not one of the profile managers taking care of this profile I think your questions and requests require further research.

Thus far I have acted on this profile to correct the reference syntax but I haven't performed any research. So I'll take a look.

The source , "Schneider Family Bible" you've shared definitely needs its information added.

Welcome to WikiTree .. Looking forward to our collaboration.
