Like other chain immigrants in Wisconsin's "Holyland," Joe's first and perhaps only language was German, though he was a 2nd generation American. His marriage to Katie Greuel ended tragically early, when she died of tuberculosis shortly after the death of their sixth child (the fifth to survive), John.
A farmer all his life, Joe died of a heart attack while working in the barn of the family farm just east of Johnsburg, Wisconsin (43.87664, -88.26549). He was 71, and is buried beside his wife in the Johnsburg cemetery.
