An Old Resident of this Village Found Hanging In a Barn by His Little Granddaughter. Amherst Bee 5 April 1894.
1
Saturday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock this village was thrown into a state of great excitement when the startling report was circulated that Alois Snyder, a well-known resident of this village, had committed suicide by hanging himself in his barn. The news spread rapidly and in a remarkably short time a large crowd had collected. He was cut down and every effort was made to revive him, but he was beyond earthly aid.
1
A few hours previous to the sad event the unfortunate gentleman was seen walking about with a rope in his hands, by his daughter, but nothing was thought of it as it was supposed that he was going to tie up some rose bushes. The full signicicance of the use of the rope was made apparent when his little granddaughter opened the barn door at 5 and made the ghastly discovery.
1
Mr. Snyder was a pleasant old gentleman and his familiar form and pleasant manner will be missed by his friends and relatives. For the past six months he had been rather childish, and would wander off at times with no definite point of view. The sad occurence is a heavy blow to his children, and falls with crushing force upon his daughter, Mrs. Mailluchet, with whom he lived.
1
the deceased was born in alsace, France, June 18 1818, and came to this country when 14 years old. He was married to Catharine Dendinger of Buffalo. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom attended the funeral. The people of the community express deep sympathy for the family.
1
The funeral was held yesterday morning from the Sts. Peter & Paul's church, Rev. Father Philipps officiating, assisted by Father Crishel. Burial took place in the Walnut Street Cemetery. (Now Union Rd).
