Georg Heinrich Schneider was born about 1757 in the Darmstadt area of what is now Germany, to parents Adam Schneider and Anna Clara (Unknown) Schneider. In 1766, his parents decided to immigrate to Russia with their four children. The family departed Luebeck on the Galliot Johannnes under the command of Skipper Stahl. [1]

After arriving in St. Petersburg, Russia, the family spent the next 9 months in temporary living quarters, through the winter, before they began their journey to the Volga River region. They were assigned to the Colony of Grimm, which was settled on 01 July 1767. One month later, the first recording of the colony residents was taken.

Based on the 1767 census, his mother, Anna Clara, and brother, Andreas, either did not survive the trek to Grimm or died shortly after their arrival.

Eight years later, his father had remarried a fellow traveler, widow Augusta Maria Seifert who brought her own three children into the family.
