Charles Harmon Shoults was born May 30, 1849, a son of Jacob Israel Shoults and Pelagia Elizabeth Valle Shoults. On March 8, 1850, Charles was christened at the St. Mary and Joseph's Catholic Church, the oldest religious congregation in Carondelet, with records dating back to 1821. Baptism, marriage and funeral records were written in French until 1858. Then in Latin until 1868, when they then recorded in English. Originally the parish was named "Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Joseph of the Angels." In 1841 it was shortened to St. Mary and Joseph. (Note: See image of Christening record)
Charles' father, Jacob Israel, later received a land grant in Crawford County near Steelville and Cherryville about 1858 and Jacob & Pelagia set up their home there by 1860. Charles married Margaret E. Quail on January 2, 1868. They are found on the United States Census of 1870, both listed as 21 years of age, with their estimated birth year between 1848 and 1849. [1] Together they had six children:
Margaret died December 24, 1889 from complications of child birth and is buried in the Cherryville Cemetery, Crawford Co., MO. Charles married Matilda Pruet in Leubbring, Franklin Co., MO on 16 June 1895 by Rev. S. N. Wall, a Baptist minister at the Shoults residence. Charles and Matilda had one son:
Charles and Matilda are found on the United States census of 1900, living in Prairie Township, Franklin County, Missouri. Living with them are children, John, and Minnie, from his first marriage and their son, George. [2]
Charles Harmon Shoults died between 1925-1930 and is buried next to his first wife, Margaret in the Cherryville Cemetery. His grave is marked by a pink granite rock. This is confirmed by his grand-daughter, Minnie Shoults Hutchings, who accompanied me to the cemetery and showed me the family graves in that cemetery.[3]
