Biography

The birth record in German states his name as "Hermann Christian Theodor Schulz" but in English he was known as Herman Christian Schultz. He was born in Mildenitz, Germany. As Wikipedia states: "Mildenitz is a village and a former municipality in the district Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Since 1 January 2015 it is part of the town Woldegk." This is located in eastern Germany near the modern border with Poland.

The year and place of birth was never clearly known until a volunteer discovered the birth record in Germany. What was clear was the birthday of 23 March (which his daughter told the authorities for his death certificate) and the place as Mecklenburg. 1842 aligns with his first appearance in a US census in 1860. The birth record which was located matches 23 Mar 1842 and the place is within historical Mecklenburg.

Herman arrived at New York City on 29 Oct 1855 with his father and brothers. In the 1860 census he was a apprentice harness maker in Dodge County, WI. He is listed as working as a harness maker in the 1869 city directory for St. Paul, MN. In 1870 he marries Laura Schroer. In the 1880 census they are living in Indianapolis, IN with 3 kids. In 1885 they are listed in a state census in Fergus Falls, MN. By the 1890s Herman owned a general store in south Omaha, NE. They are also enumerated in Omaha in the 1900 and 1920 census records.
