Joan Helen Swanson Joan passed away December 3, 2013 in Seattle after a 12 year struggle with Alzheimer's.
Joan was born January 3, 1935 to John and Helen Schultz in Duluth, MN. She moved to West Seattle in 1939, attended Holy Rosary School, graduated from West Seattle High School in 1952, and attended Seattle University.
She married the love of her life, Don, in 1958. They made their home in West Seattle where they raised their 3 children. She was active in PTA, her children's scout troops, Children's Orthopedic Guild and the Federated Women's Club. Joan and Don loved traveling the world, but Hawaii was near and dear to her heart. She took great joy in sharing this love with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending weekends with her family at her "home away from home" on Hood Canal. Other hobbies included gardening, reading, photography, walks at Alki beach and spending time with her grandchildren.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband Don in 2000. She is survived by her 3 children Mark (Susan), Colleen Flanigan (Kevin), and Janet Pedersen (Brandon), her 9 grandchildren: Jeff and Amy Swanson, Megan, Brian, Molly and Kyle Flanigan, and Blake, Annika and Natalie Pedersen, and one great-granddaughter. The family is grateful for the wonderful care she received from Jesse, Lita, and staff at The Sacred Heart Adult Family Home.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic Church: 1240 NE 127th St., Seattle on Saturday, December 21st at 10:00 AM. Memorials may be given to Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation PO Box 5371 Seattle, WA 98145-5005 or The Alzheimer's Association. P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090.
