Biography

William was born in New Rochelle, New York, the son of Jacob Schureman, of Dutch descent, and Jane Parcot, of Huguenot descent. In 1768, he married Jane Bonnet. Schurman; he married Elizabeth Hyatt in 1778.

William Schurman remained loyal to Britain during the American revolution and was a Loyalist He left New Rochelle, New York in 1783, and immigrated to Tryon on St. John's Island (later Prince Edward Island). He settled at Bedeque the following year, setting up a store in his house and engaging in trade with a ship that he owned. He is listed in the Muster Roll for July, 1784. He was a farmer, merchant, and dealt in lumber.

In addition to being a businessman, he was a politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1785 to 1787.

Besides serving in the colony's assembly, he was also a justice of the peace and overseer for roads. After losing his ship in 1799, Schurman became involved in shipbuilding. In 1808, he bought a wooded area along the Wilmot River, constructed a sawmill and entered into the trade in lumber. He died at his home in the Wilmot Valley in 1819.

2) William Scureman and Lybia Hyat were married on 17 October 1778. The marriage was recorded in the Dutch Reformed Church records for Hopewell, Fishkill and Marbletown. Both were residents of Oswego.[3]

In his will, Schurman named his wife Elizabeth, and named the following children: Peter, Sarah Baker, Caleb, Isaac, John, Jane Silliker, Jacob, Elizabeth Thompson, and William. Some grandchildren were also given bequests, including Daniel Tompkins, son of Thomas and Mary Tompkins. [4]

"The Schuremans of New York"Cornell University LibraryCompiled by Richard WynkoopCopyright 1903William Schurman was a man of ability and intelligence, with the courage and versatility required for success in his time. He was conspicuously practical as well, apparently able to turn his hand to almost anything, from shipbuilding to coopering and blacksmithing, and able to ride out the forced move from New Rochelle and later losses to arrive at a comfortable old age, a man of substance, entrusted with dispensing justice to those of his neighbours who appeared before him in court. ?His public duty as a Member of the Assembly and as a Magistrate,? states his death notice in the Prince Edward Island Gazette, ?were ever of a piece with his other conduct, marked with strong discernment and vigorous activity of mind, which were always evinced by his purity of intention and sound judgment.? Schurman-119 and Schurman-41 appear to represent the same person because: They appear to be the same person, 119 does not have a date of birth just an approximate date but the death dates are the same. My GEDCOM file matches both as well. I am a descendant of William Schurman and Elizabeth Hyatt.
