Biography

My Grandmother

CAROLINE MARY (SCHWARTZ) KOCH

Grandmother Koch was the sixth child of eight of Joseph Schwartz and Josephine Zimmet. She was born on Schwartz Rd. in Lancaster, N.Y., June 10, 1870. She was baptized June 11, 1870 at St. Mary's Church, Lancaster, N. Y. She was baptized Mary Caroline. Her Mother Josephine died March 31, 1872. She never really knew her Mother. On January 11, 1876 her Father Joseph married Gertrude Link Hiebler who she considered her real Mother. Joseph and Gertrude had four children.

The house that Grandma was born in is still standing today, January, 1995. It is at the southwest corner of Schwartz Rd. and William St. which ends at Schwartz Rd. There is a small stream that flows west just to the north of the house. This creek is called Little Buffalo Creek. This creek and several others meet to form Cayuga Creek in Lancaster. Weather permitting, Grandma (Carrie as she was known), would help with the family laundry in this creek. Needless to say living conditions were very rough in those days.

I don't know much about her childhood except that she attended School No. 10 at the southeast corner of Broadway and Schwartz Rd. This building, in the 1950's was moved across Broadway and was converted into a house. It is two or three doors east of Schwartz Rd.

How, when and where my Grandparents met I do not know. At the time of their marriage Grandpa was living at home at 17 Sweeney St., Buffalo.

Grandma's brother Charles was living in the city at that time. He may have found a job for her.

Grandma and Grandpa were married Oct. 29, 1890 at St. Mary of Sorrows rectory. The witnesses were her brother Charles and Elizabeth Ignaz who were married Sept. 24, 1891 at St. Mary of Sorrows Church. Father A. Bornefeld officiated at my Grandparents wedding.

Grandma had twelve children, three boys and nine girls. My Mother was the eldest. At this time, Jan., 1995, four are still living, Uncle Norman, Aunt Marie, Uncle Joseph and Aunt Rita. Grandma was short and very cheerful and fun loving. She and Grandpa are my Godparents. She was always planning a party for some reason. Every summer there was a large family reunion at Como Park in Lancaster. What fun

Grandma spoke fluent German. She and Mother talked frequently on the telephone. A lot of the conversation was in German. We had a three or four party line and if they suspected someone was listening to them they spoke in German. Our first phone number was Crescent 0.580M. No dials in those days.

Grandma died of cancer at home at 21 Collingwood Ave., Buffalo, N. Y. , Tuesday, April 27, 1934. She was 63 years, 10 months and 14 days old. After a Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Church on Bailey Ave. , Buffalo, she was interred in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Pine Hill, Cheektowaga, Lot No. 694, Section C.

May she rest in peace.
