Ignatz was born in 1914. The 1920 U.S. census showed his name as "Ignaz Schwarz" which is the correct German spelling. But it was later written with "t" before each "z" - "Ignatz Schwartz" - in order to mimic the German pronunciation. He was usually called "Ig".
As a young man, he worked on ranches in northern New Mexico. During World War II, he served in the U.S. army in Libya and Italy. After the war he bought and operated Stockmen's Café at Springer, New Mexico for over 20 years.
Ig was married twice, first to Dolores Rolfes about 1950, and second to Helen Tomoń in 1959. He spent his final years as cook at Vermejo Park Guest Ranch, which was owned by Pennzoil. He passed away in 2003 at Albuquerque, age 89, but was buried at Springer. [1]
