“My favorite part of the Erddig story begins with Philip Yorke II.
According to the Erddig guidebook, the poor young man was pushed into marriage to an Annette Puleston in 1877.
After their honeymoon, she left him without even a note saying good-bye and hitched a ride on a milk truck.
The strange circumstances of his separation shut Philip out of Welsh society. Not heart-broken by either event, he plunged into helping the London poor, seeing to the welfare of the Erddig servants, touring Europe, taking up various artistic endeavors, and becoming a avid cyclist.
Annette died in 1899, and at age 50, Philip married a fellow cyclist, Louisa Scott, and begat two sons.”
Louisa Matilda Scott, daughter of Thomas James and Sophia Anne Scott, was christened in Scrayingham, Yorkshire, England on 26 July 1863.[1] Her birth was registered in 1863.[2]
In 1901 she was living in Chilton Foliatt, age 37, with her parents and younger sister Helena. The census that year said she was born in Howsham (a township within Scrayingham parish)[3][4]
She married Philipe Yorke in Q2 1902 in Hungerford Registration District, Berkshire.[5]
She moved to Erddig, North Wales (where her husband was from) where she was recorded in 1911 with her two sons.[6]
We regret to record the death which took place yesterday of Mrs. Louisa Matilda Yorke, of Erddig, Wrexham. Mrs. Yorke, who was 87 years of age, married the late Mr. Philip Yorke in 1902. She was the daughter of the Rev. T. J. Scott, rector of Chilton ffoliot, near Hungerford, and sometime Consular Chaplain at Malaga, Spain.
Mrs. Yorke was born at Devizes [actually Yorkshire] and her father, who was curate there, took his wife, three children and two maids to Malaga. Mrs. Yorke lived there until she was twelve and retained the ability to speak Spanish fluently all her life.
During her life at Erddig, she was a regular attender at Wrexham Parish Church, and walked both ways each Sunday, sometimes twice in a day, until she was 85. She is survived by two sons, Mr. Simon Yorke, born in 1903, and Mr. Philip Yorke, born in 1905.
The funeral arrangements have not yet been made but cremation will be at Landican, and a service is likely to be held in Wrexham Parish Church followed by interment of the ashes at Marchwiel.
Queen Mary once paid a visit to Erddig when she was staying in Shropshire.[8]
A collection of paintings of her, made in 1906, are on display in Erddig Hall, which is now a National Trust property.[9]
