Alexander was born about 1855/56 in Logie Easter, Ross-shire. His mother, Christina came from that area, but his father (also Alexander) was born in Dalkeith.
In 1861 Alexander (age 6) was living at Newfield, Ross-shire with his parents and older brother and sister.
By 1871 the family had moved to Cullen.
In 1881 Alexander was living with his parents, brother and sister at Seafield Street, Cullen. He was working as an Assistant Forester.
On 24 July 1884, Alexander married Margaret Ann Redford. The witnesses were his brother John Scott and Margaret's brother John Redford.[1]
Alexander and Margaret had 8 children. The sixth, Janet Douglas Scott, was my Grandmother.
About 1900 the family returned to Ross-shire. They were living at Culish, Parish of Knockbain when the 1901 Census[2] was taken. They were still in the same area in 1911.[3] Only Janet, Eliza and Alexander were living at home. All are listed as being at school. Ernest Scott (age 9 months) is listed as son. On checking his birth registration, I found that his mother was Mary, so he would be grandson of Alexander and Margaret Ann.
Alexander died on 28 January 1922 in the District Asylum, Inverness. His son Alexander Scott was the informant.
Prior to being admitted to the District Asylum, Alexander was living at Viewbank, Drynie, North Kessock.
On the death registration, Alexander (son) has given the address 1 Murray Place, Haugh Road, Inverness. It seems Alexander (senior) may have been living there for a short time too, and possibly Eliza. The owner of the property was Mr Robertson.
The 1921 Census shows that Alexander (66) was living at 1 Murray Place, Inverness. Also living there were his children: Janet (28), Eliza (26) and Alexander (22). [4]
I have viewed the records of my Great Grandfathers time in the District Asylum. He was admitted on 12 July 1921. His age was stated as 67. (66 on death registration). He was 5' 9" tall and had brown eyes.
Elsie (Eliza) and Alexander are both mentioned in the hospital records. They reported that he became depressed after a family bereavement.
