Biography

Edward Scott was born in 1706 in New Kent, Virginia to John Scott and Judith Dudley. He married Ann Cox on 1 Aug 1726 in Henrico, Virginia. Children: Frances Jane, John, Elizabeth, Daniel, Frances Ann, Samuel. He died on 24 Mar 1738 in Goochland, Virginia. Probate date was 18 Apr 1738.

Fine Creek Mill is one of the oldest structures in Powhatan County. In 1735 Samuel Pleasants leased one acre on the south side of Powhatan creek to Edward Scott for 99 years, "at the rent of one ear of corn yearly."

"In consideration whereof said Edward Scott binds himself to build at his own cost...a water grist mill..." Scott died two years later, according to the records, and willed the property, mills, Manakin Town Ferry and slaves to his son Daniel.

In 1762, Pleasants renewed the lease agreement for the Fine Creek Mill with Daniel's brother, John, for the remainder of the 99-year agreement signed 27 years earlier by his father.

A copy of insurance papers drawn on the Scott property in 1795 shows that the mill was 36-by-60 feet with an overshot wheel to power it and an adjacent sawmill. The walls of the first floor were constructed of rock and the two stories above were constructed of wood.

The mill operated until the late 1930s, after which floods destroyed two millpond dams, and later the mill was operated with an automobile engine. Today, the stone walls of the first floor and part of the race remain. The space is now used as a venue for weddings and receptions.
