SCOTT.—On the 26th inst., at University-terrace, Carlton, of scarlet fever, Mabel, eldest daughter of Henry Forde Scott, aged two years and five months. [3] BALLAN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) IT is with great regret that we have to refer to the death of the wife and eldest daughter of Mr. Henry Forde Scott, late officiating minister at St. John's Church, Ballan. The deceased lady was residing with her mother during her accouchement, and prior to taking up her residence with her husband at Broadmeadows, and was doing well with her infant, when scarlet fever attacked the children, and Mrs. Scott also. She died on the 24th inst., and the eldest child on the following Tuesday. Between the deceased and those who knew her in Ballan the most friendly feelings existed, and universal sympathy is felt with the afflicted husband and father in his great loss. [4]

DEATH OF THE REV. H. F. SCOTT. News of the death yesterday at his residence, High street, Windsor, of the Rev Henry Forde Scott will be received with regret, especially in Anglican circles. The life of the reverend gentleman was as pic- turesque as it was useful. At the age of 15 years he landed in Victoria and began his career at the diggings. At the age of 20 years he became a school teacher and a few years later he joined the Anglican Church. For many years he was chaplain of the Melbourne Gaol, and articles he contributed to the press on prison discip-line and the method of treating criminals attracted considerable attention. Owing to his remarkable personality, the Rev. Mr Scott was enabled to influence for good many criminals with whom he came in con- tact. slum work was another phase of the activities of the reverend gentleman. Though retired from active parochial work for over a year, the Rev. Mr. Scott was still at the time of his death chaplain of the Melbourne and Woman's Hospitals. On Sunday he preached at St. James's Old Cathedral, which was his last appointment, and he was then apparently in good health. On Monday evening, however, he became sud- denly ill from heart affection, and early yes- terday afternoon he died. Mr. Scott, who was aged 71 years, left a widow and family of six sons and four daughters. The funeral will take place privately to-day. [8]
