Biography

Doug Scott was born in 1921, his parents were Bill Scott and Annie Cave
Doug Scott is an Anzac who served in World War Two.

Allan Douglas Scott was a Sergeant in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Service No. NZ 401234.

Doug was an Observer in a Bristol Beaufort (Beaufighter) reconnaissance aircraft and torpedo bomber posted RAF Coastal Command 217 Squadron. The Coastal Command patrolled and defended the waters around Great Britain during the Second World War. In 1941, a section of 217 Squadron was based at St.Eval, near Padstow on the north coast of Cornwall. Though the aircraft of the Coastal Command ranged far and wide, attacking coastal targets in Scandinavia, Germany and occupied Europe, mid 1941 saw them concentrating on the heavily defended harbour at Brest, in Brittany.

Doug was killed on a mission over Brittany on the 17th July 1941 and is one of four New Zealanders buried in the cemetery at Escoublac-la-Boule, at the mouth of the Loire River near St.Nazaire. He was 20 years old. During the German occupation of Brittany, Louise Jaouen who lived in La Baule, cared for the local cemetery. She maintained the graves of servicemen as they were buried there, collecting money in secret to provide a monument for each grave. Doug Scott is buried beside Flying Officer Eric Charles Whitehead and Sergeant Alec Windle, two of the four crew of the Beaufort in which they all died on the 14th July. The fourth member of their crew, Flight Lieutenant Thomas Francis Kerr was found separately and is buried a few miles away in Pornic War Cemetery.

Doug is buried in Escoublac-La-Baule War Cemetery, St.Nazaire France (grave 1.C.20). [1]
