Biography

  • Walter was born on May 16, 1877 -- the second child of Frederick William Scott and Edith Maria Monday Scott.
  • He grew up in south London and is recorded in the English census data for 1881, 1891, and 1901 as living with his parents in Hackney and Lewisham.
  • By 1901 he was a bank clerk, working for the Midland Bank (for which he continued to work for for another 50 years).
  • He married Myrtle Annie Hawkins on April 29, 1909, at Anerly Methodist Church, Bromley, London, England (and the marriage was registered in Croydon, Surrey). Walter and Myrtle had been "engaged" for 8 years by the time they got married -- 4 years "unofficially" and another 4 years "officially" after she reached the age of 21.
  • In 1910 his occupation (as listed in the probate of his father's will), was "Bank cashier".
  • By 1911 he and Myrtle were living at 8 Gerard Road, Barnes, in south London, and he is listed in the 1911 census data as a "Bank cashier".
  • By 1918, after the birth of their third child, Walter and Myrtle had moved to Blackheath in Greenwich, where they were to live for about the next 30 years, first at 18 Eliot Park Road and then at 11 Eliot Place.
  • I believe that Walter must have retired from the Midland Bank shortly after the end of World War II, perhaps in about 1947, and he would have completed 50 years' employment with the bank at about that time; he was given a gold fountain pen and pencil set from Mabie, Todd & Co. as a retirement gift.
  • He and Myrtle retired to the West County, which they both loved, living at Court Cottage, Exford, Somerset, for the next 15 years.
  • It is fair to say that Walter was "Victorian" in his approach to life. He had been brought up as a Baptist and was a very regular church-goer -- but he loved sports, was an ardent cricket "fan", and played golf and billiards (but not snooker). On the other hand, he could seem very "distant" to young children.
  • He passed away on February 4,1963, at a hospital in Minehead, and was buried at the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene (also known as the Church of St. Salvyn), Exford, Somerset, England.

Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
The story goes that after Walter and Myrtle moved to Exford, he became a regular reader of lessons at the local church on Sundays -- until the Rector discovered that, as a Baptist, Walter had never been baptized according the the rites of the Church of England, and therefore was not eligible to act as a reader of the lessons. Apparently both men were unhappy about this: Walter because he loved doing it and the Rector because Walter was his best reader!
