Biography

In 1870 Mary was living in her father's household in Burke, County, North Carolina.^[1] Based upon this census report, I have estimated her birth year as 1869, however there is a discrepancy between this and the age provided on her marriage certificate which would put her birth year at 1866.

In 1880, Mary is living with her parents in Burke County, North Carolina.^[2]

On July 4, 1885 Mary married Julius Alexander Fox in Gaston, North Carolina. Her marriage certificate states her age as 19 but based upon census reports for 1870 and 1880, I believe she was 16 when she married Julius. ^[3]

After this point I have been unable to locate Mary or determine if any children were born from the marriage. I did receive information from another researcher who believes that Mary died in 1886 possibly during childbirth but I need evidence of this fact. Julius shows up next remarried and living in Colorado on the 1900 census. All of the children listed on the census appear to belong to the second wife. Since records for the 1890 census were destroyed, it is difficult to narrow down her date of death if that is what occurred. Something happened to Mary most definitely between 1885 and 1892 when Julius remarried...the research continues.
