Biography

Abraham Scott was born on January 8, 1677, in Hillsborough, County Down, Ulster, Ireland. His parents were Hugh Scott and his wife, Jane (Carruthers) Scott. His grandparents were originally from Scotland; they were transplanted to Ulster, Ireland, by English kings both to maintain English law and order and restrain the local Roman Catholic Irish.

On January 6, 1695, in Hillsborough, County Down, Ireland, Abraham Scott married fellow-Scots-Irish Presbyterian, Margaret McFarland, born on January 8, 1680. She was barely 15 years old. Within a year or two of their marriage, the young couple emigrated to William Penn's new religious-tolerant colony of Pennsylvania. Reports that they were there by 1670 are mistaken; they arrived between 1696 and 1699.

The Scotts received land patents from William Penn's sons in an area that was originally in Chester County, but later became Donegal Township, Lancaster County as the area's population grew. They were "Scots Covenanters" or Calvinist Presbyterians. They had 9 children, all born in Chester / Lancaster County, Pennsylvania:[1][2]

  1. Ann (Scott) Patterson, Oct 1699 - May 1792 in Lancaster Co. PA
  2. Abraham Scott (abt.1702-abt.1749)
  3. Grace Scott (1715-1745) Chester Co. to York Co. PA
  4. Griselda Scott (18 Jan 1704 - 1738 d: in Lancaster Co. PA
  5. Thomas Scott (1705-1796) d: in Washington Co., PA
  6. Samuel Scott (Dec 1705-1776) d: in Logan Co., Ohio
  7. Rebecca (Scott) Agnew (1707-1789) d: in Gettysburg PA
  8. Elizabeth Scott, 8 Apr. 1710 in Chester Co. PA; Deceased
  9. Alexander Scott (1716-1787)
  10. Major Hugh Scott, Sr., 1726 - 1819
  11. Josiah Scott, 1735 - 1819

Some time after her last son was born, Margaret and her husband moved further west onto land that became York County, Pennsylvania, near the Susquehanna River. She died there on 2 February 1780 at 99 - 100 years old. [3] Her husband preceded her in death, dying on their farm around 1760 at about 87 years old. They are buried next to each other at Chanceford Presbyterian Cemetery, Airville, York County, Pennsylvania, USA. [4]

Scott-15026 and Scott-3601 are not ready to be merged because: There are important differences in birth and death data between the 2 profiles but they do seem to represent the same man.

2 profile managers will be looking this over in the next weeks. Do NOT merge until they can work on this, please.
