Biography

Bartlett M. Scott was born in Kentucky about 1818. He first married in 1838 to Mary Ann Greenawalt, daughter of James Greenawalt and Katherine Hoover. Records indicate Mary Ann was born in Hardin County but she and Bartlett married in Harrison County, Indiana.

Bartlett's household of 1840 was enumerated in Hardin County, Kentucky with a wife and infant daughter under 5 years. His next door neighbor was James Gilliland who, as a widower, had married to Mary Ann's widowed mother Katherine (Hoover) Greenawalt in 1832. She was the widow of James Greenawalt who named his wife and minor daughter Mary Ann Greenawalt in his will dated 13 September 1826. Greenawalt had divided his estate equally between his wife and child. Bartlett and James Gilliland being neighbors definitely is indicative of the marriage of Bartlett to Mary Ann Greenawalt, the orphaned daughter of James Greenawalt. Additionally, Bartlett signed the bond when James Gilliland, again a widower, remarried in 1847.

Bartlett's wife Mary Ann apparently passed away prior to 1850. He again married in February of 1850 to Ann "Nancy" Elizabeth Turner. William Mattingly attested to the bride being age 21, and she was thereafter enumerated in Bartlett's household of 1850 as Ann E. Scott at age 19. This was likely Nancy's true age when she became step-mother to Bartlett's four surviving children by his first wife.

Scott first appeared at age 21 on the Hardin Co. tax list in 1874, neighbor to Granville Scott, indicating he would have been the age of Lucy Scott enumerated in 1860.
