Biography

(All that follows is per Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 9, pp. 437-438): [1]

Jesse Scott was baptized at Scarborough's Second Church, 25 Mar 1761, the son of Samuel Scott and Susannah Perry [See SAMUEL SCOTT family in Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 9, pp. 445ff], d at Machias bef 22 Apr 1820, ae about 60y, and possibly d 14 Jan 1820; [2] [3] m (1) at Machias, 26 Nov 1786, Bethiah Bracey; m (2) 25 Oct 1801, also at Machias, her sister, Sarah (Bracey) Rich.

Jesse's parents removed to Machias in 1763, his father being one of the initial 18 settlers to that town. Jesse is credited with service during the Revolutionary War on multiple occasions 1777-79, though for brief periods and all for the defense of Machias, except in 1779, which service was at Penobscot. Jesse received a 100-acre lot in [East] Machias from his father, which lot he sold to his brother, Mark, in 1813, together with a 1/8th interest in the stream saw of the mill Republican. Jesse was among the initial 18 persons approved by the Boston-based proprietors of Twp. 15 [Cooper] in 1812 for settlement in that township. Although Jesse acquired two pieces of land there and partnered with John Cooper [see JOHN COOPER family in Maine Families in 1790, 7:94-96] in the erection of a saw and grist mill, he was termed "of Machias" in May 1819, when he sold these properties in Cooper to his son, Jesse Jr. (Washington Co deed 14:75). In 1807, Jesse was appointed administrator de bonis non of the estate of his brother, Theodore Scott (Washington Co Probate 3:421-23), the administration of which estate was not concluded until 1815, it being insolvent (Washington Co Probate 4:302-3).
