In the 1881 UK Census, he is listed as Joseph Scott, a retired chief gunner, RN aged 57 and born in Camberwell, London. From the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette Daily Telegrams - Mon. 17th October 1870: ARGALL - Oct. 11, at St Stephen's Church, Devonport, Mr Joseph Scott R.N., to Susan, second daughter of Mr Joseph Argall, of Southampton.

He lived at Cambridge Road, Ford in Devonport as a retired Chief Gunner. He stood surety for Joseph Stephens Argall (a minor) on the death of Joseph Argall, who was a widower.

DEATH: His death is recorded in the GRO indexes for the Stoke Damerel Registration District for the December quarter of 1891 under reference 5b 260. Age is given as 67. His date of death is recorded in the parish burial register as 19 November 1891.
