John "Rooster" Scott was born on February 10, 1833. to William Scott and Mary "Polly" Birdsong.

He was married to Barbara Ann Wade on April 8, 1852, in Moniteau County, Missouri.[1] They had at least five children together, three of whom were living with them in Moniteau, Missouri, for the 1860 census.[2] Two of their sons, and one son's wife, were living in them in 1880 in Walker, along with a child listed as a son (who is more likely a grandson.)[3]
He died on August 17, 1908.
