Sylvia's brother, Earl, was killed in the New London school explosion. Sylvia wasn't at school at the time of the disaster because she had left early for a typing competition with 3 other girls. Marguerite Eakes was one of them. Marguerite also lost a brother that day, Forrest.
When they heard of the disaster, the teacher brought them back to the school. They got out of the car and wandered around the site, in shock. Sylvia just started walking and was found later wandering down the railroad tracks.
