I have adopted the WT profile of wife, Unknown Unknown, who will have name changed to Mary Thackston/Thaxton, and I will be adding as much of her info as seems reasonable at this preliminary stage. Also need to add 1850 US Census when this William is in his son, William's house in Davidson county, TN. (Note by Steve Lake on 02July2018)

Research

The 2018 Collaborative Process Project includes William Scott (1720?-1794), his wife Lucy (Maiden Name Unknown) (1722?-1805) and their twelve children as listed in William Scott's 1793/1794 Will of Bedford county, Virginia. Research notes for William Scott, Sr. can be found on Space:Supplemental William Scott 1720-1794 of Bedford, Virginia. The first stage was to collect as much tree info and family history as possible, without regard for quality of support. The second stage was to evaluate that info to direct more specific searches for sources. The third stage involved starting a rough outline for the biography and creating source citations. The fourth stage is continued source searches, bio and source editing and moving what is left of the "research" section to the bottom of the profile. The fifth, and last, stage is to complete our "reasonably exhaustive research," finalize bio and sources, and to make changes to the data fields in compliance with sources and biography.

Starting with information, relationships and sources found on FamilySearch.org, then using google searches to find additional information, whether it agrees or disagrees, all will be collected here. In writing the bio summary from the information on FamilySearch, there are some obvious problems. The two marriages listed are concurrent and the second wife married at age 14. We will collect as many other versions of this William as possible and show them here for evaluation.

The 2018 Collaborative Process on the family of William and Lucy Scott has expanded its scope several times. It became apparent that William's origins were in Maryland and we needed to conduct research in the records of that Colony. At the same time it has been found that there are so few supporting records for William's children that we have necessarily began conducting research on his grandchildren in order to provide collateral support to the entire family line.

I am Don Scott, keeper of the Scott Family tree open on ancestry. As one can from comments see the origins of William Scott d 1794 in Bedford Co Va. are varied and without substantiation. These vary from parents Walter Scott and Helen Wilson and born in Denny Scotland;parent John came from Ireland and William born in Charles County, Md;came from Selkirk, Scotland, parents Walter and Janet Inlis, etc. I have studied this William(my ancestor)for many years. I can prove William and Lucretia and their decendants from Bedford forward. Although I have traveled to Ireland and Scotland many times and visited most of the counties of Va and Md. I do not know where William and Lucretia came from nor where they married.

He was twice married,first to Elizabeth Foster and second to Frances S. Andrews. He had a half-sister Mary and a half-brother Zadok that were children of James Thackston and Sarah Elebank (a widow ) married in 1765. The above Mary married Rev. Pemberton Smith.
There is some confusion with the James Thaxton of Bedford County and James Thackston of James City, Amelia and Prince Edward Cos. Va. The former was illiterate and married to Elizabeth Clark. The latter had the above mentioned Mary.

Arnold (Ellanore Scott Riper Arnold 1893-1972) to Mrs. Kennedy on Tuesday 25 Aug 1959, regarding her ancestor, Charles Scott, son of William Scott of Bedford county, Virginia, whose Will was proven on 24 Nov 1794. This letter tried to prove satisfactorily Ellanore's ancestral line to Charles Scott, and subsequently to William Scott.
"Bedford county has no early records of six of the children of William Scott, Sr. vis: Charles, Evan, Jacob [sic. Joseph?], Obediah, Thomas and Sarah [Scott] Lee." The other six children (all sons) of William, Sr. [i.e. Axton, George, Peter, John, James and William] do have records in Bedford county and are listed with source references from "Early Bedford County Marriage" and "Early Bedford County Property Notes." The latter may also be known as "Bedford County Virginia Deed Book" in several volumes.

An info and source matrix has been started, in order to assess what information can be proven for every member of William's birth family. Seven siblings have census records and so those will need to be itemized. Two have marriage records. Two have known land records. One is mentioned in a published family history book about the Poston's. Work on this collaboration process continues. (Note by Steve Lake on 12Sep2018)

Biography

William was born about 1749 and his birth place was in Maryland. He was the sixth child of William Scott, Sr. and the sixth and last child of his father's first unknown wife of Maryland. His mother died shortly after William, Jr. was born, his father second married Lucy (Lucretia James of James City county, Virginia), then the family moved to Lunenburg county, Virginia, two years before this location became part of Bedford county in 1753.

William Scott, Jr. was born about 1742 in Bedford, Virginia. He was the son of William Scott(1732?-1794) and Lucretia "Lucy" James (1732?-1805). This info from FamilySearch/org.

He probably first married in the 1770's and had about six children; Lucretia (1778-1830), William (1780-1830), Thomas (1784-1841), George (1785-1852), Mary (1786-1870), Rhoda (1790-1852). He then second married second Mary Thackston (1745-1816) on 6 March 1792 in Bedford county, Virginia. They subsequently had children; Jonathon Thaxton (1794-1860), Sinclair (1795-1850), Sarah (1797-1830) and Moses (1798-1835). See details below.

William died 5 May 1813 in Davidson county, Tennessee. See details below.

Birth

Some say that William Scott, Jr. was born about 1742 in Bedford, Virginia, but this is not proven.
Using the birth order of his father's 1793 Will, William was the sixth child and may have been born about 1750, after Thomas and before Charles. The birth dates of Thomas and Charles have not been proven, but Joseph has been proven in 1757 and he was child number 9, so Thomas, William and Charles, as well as Axton, were all born before 1757. Some older family histories state that William, Sr. lived in St. Georges or Charles county, Maryland where his first unknown wife had his first six children.

Parents

He was the son of William Scott(1732?-1794) and Lucretia "Lucy" James (1732?-1805). This is proven by his father's Will, dated 7Dec1793.[4] This does not necessarily mean that William, Jr. and his five older siblings were the biological children of Lucy. There are six indicators that Lucy was the second wife of William, Sr. and a step-mother to William, Jr.

Marriage

He first married Unknown probably in the early 1770's. This is only an assumption, but indirectly proven because of children attributed to him being born before 1792. See arguments in Marriage and Children sections.

Mar. 9, 1793; William Scott & Mary Thackston; Peter Scott, Surety; Consent of John and Elizabeth Baker, "which are all the parents she has alive".[5]
William's marriage to Mary Thackston (1745-1816) on 6 March 1792 in Bedford county, Virginia[6] was probably his second marriage. Circumstantial evidence of William's death in 1813 during the War of 1812 and Mary's subsequent writing of a Will in 1816 suggests that Mary Thackston was the wife of William and his widow, making it possible that he had an earlier marriage. (Note by Steve Lake on 16Jun2018) The marriage and children need to be looked at more closely and several questions need to be answered. Which date is right, 1792 or 1793? Secondary sources are provided showing two different dates, which will require going back to the primary source. If marriage date is correct, why are eight of the ten children born before that? Comparison to Mary Thaxton's 1816 Will may help answer that question. (Note by Steve Lake on 1Sep2018)

His marriage to Mary Baker Pegram (1767-1822) on 10 October 1781 in Dinwiddie county, Virginia is not valid. This information was formerly on FamilySearch.org but has been changed. In studying Mary Baker Pegram and her family, it became obvious that her Pegrams had intermarried with Scott's several times and all or most of those Scott's were related to Gen. Winfield Scott. These Pegram's and Scott's were from eastern Virginia and only as far west as Dinwiddie county. Therefore it was concluded that there was no connection to the Scott's of Bedford county, VA. It is acknowledged that many trees connect this William to Mary Baker Pegram, but it was not possible for him to have two concurrent marriages, so this one seems less likely if not impossible. It is also acknowledged that Mary Thaxton's adopted parents, John and Elizabeth Baker. may be the source of this confusion. (Note by Steve Lake on 16Jun2018)

Children

William had ten children;
Four by his first wife;

  1. Lucretia (1778-1830)
  2. William (1780-1830)
  3. Sarah (1797-1830)
  4. George (1785-1852)

Children by Mary Thackston;

  1. Thomas (1784-1841) Actually born after 1792.
  2. Mary (1786-1870) Actually born after 1792.
  3. Rhoda (1790-1852) Actually born after 1792.
  4. Jonathon Thaxton (1794-1860)
  5. Sinclair (1795-1850)
  6. Moses (1768-1835) Further work has determined that 1768 was too early and there were at least three Moses Scotts being confused. This son was born 1798.

The birth order and birth year estimates listed above were taken from FamilySearch.org and their birth dates do not correlate to other sources and subsequent reasoning. These children are confirmed in the Will of Mary Thaxton Scott in Davidson county, Tennessee, dated 1816/1822, which obviously divided the first four as children of her husband and the last six as her biological children. Her step-children were William III, George, Lucretia Patterson and Sarah Yeates. The subsequent division of boys and girls makes it impossible to assume any birth order for the Will list order.

Residence

Birth in Bedford county, Virginia is not proven. First marriage in Bedford county, Virginia is not proven. 1787 Bedford county, Virginia - found on tax lists[7] 1793 Bedford county, Virginia - listed in father's will, but bequeathement of one sterling shilling may suggest that he did not live nearby.[8] It is believed by many that William and Mary moved to Davidson county, Tennessee, and that fact is upheld by the Will of Mary 1816, written in that county.(Note by Steve Lake on 16Jun2018)

Military

FamilySearch profile has title "Private" and other trees do mention his military service. It is believed that he died in 1813 during the War of 1812. His wife wrote her will in Davidson county, Tennessee in 1816, which gives credibility to this death date.[9]

A possible record for William's military service is found in "Virginia Colonial Militia 1651-1776" Crozier, NY 1905. Genealogical Publishers, Baltimore 1965. Page 49. William Scott, Drummer in 1st Virginia Regiment. Greenbrier County, Virginia 21 March 1780. Listings for Bedford County had no one named Scott.

Some Scott family historians assert that William, Sr. and all his sons had military service in the War for Independence. Evaluating the revised ages of this family during 1776-1783 makes this unlikely, especially for William, Sr. and his youngest sons. It is more likely if William, Sr. had military service it was in the Virginia militia before 1776, but he may have provided goods or non-military service after that. Obediah's pension statement says that he substituted for his brother, William, who had a wife and young family.

Death

William died 5 May 1813 in Davidson county, Tennessee is not proven. Some say this is the date he died while serving in the military during the War of 1812, place unknown.

Scott-57435 and Scott-209 appear to represent the same person because: Date estimates, spouses, and death date and location match.

During our project we have found some hints that William Scott's widow, Lucy, was not the mother of all 12 children listed in the 1793 Will of William. The theory of two marriages and the six indicators appears on William's profile and consequently five of his children oldest lack a profile for a mother. This sets the oldest five children as half-siblings to each other.

There is a profile for "First Wife of Maryland" on FamilySearch.org, created on 4 Nov 2018 and found here https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GMWP-QGG

Using that profile as an example, we can discuss what works and what needs to be adjusted. Starting with the name, I have had a lot of interference regarding "First Wife of" for the first name and "Maryland" as the birth surname. In reality, both names are unknown, but "Unknown" in either field is unacceptable, both on FS & WT. I dislike using married name for birth name.

The proposed profile will have two sources, one is the 1793 Will of William Scott in Bedford county, Virginia. The second is a 2018 book, "Who Are Her People?: The Life and Family of Louise Maynard Hoskins" by Rebecca Hoskins Goodwin, with a link to Google books.

Thank you for your input as we proceed.

Scott-2786 and Scott-209 appear to represent the same person because: Disregard date estimates and relationships. William and Lucy James Scott had a son, William who married Mary Thackston and they had a daughter named Lucretia (Lucy). I am attempting to merge duplicates of the younger William | Scott-2786, who's two wives are named Lucy James. Both could be merged into the mother's profile. I am proposing merging one into the mother (Lucy James Scott | James-83) and the other into the younger William's actual wife, Mary Thackston.

Scott-4069 and Scott-2786 appear to represent the same person because: In entering another William Scott, these two were suggested and it appears they are the same person. It looks like one needs to be adopted. Since this is not my line of Scott, I wanted you to have the choice. Please merge.

Thank you.
