John Scot was born in 1725[2]

"On 5 November 1770, he married Lady Mary Hay, daughter of the Earl of Errol, then 16 years old; they were divorced in 1771. It is mentioned in one source that she eloped with another man.[10] He married secondly, on 5 June 1773 the Hon Margaret Dundas, daughter of Robert Dundas, of Arniston, the younger.[11] They had three daughters: Henrietta, born 1774, who married William Bentinck, 4th Duke of Portland; Lucy, born 28 March 1775, who married Francis Stuart, 10th Earl of Moray;[12] Joan, born 15 March 1776 (three months after her father's death), who married George Canning." General John Scott was a successful gambler and lived in high style at Balcomie Castle, co. Fife. One daughter married the 10th Earl of Moray, another the 4th Duke of Portland, and the third married George Canning.

He married, firstly, Lady Mary Hay, daughter of James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll and Rebecca Lockhart, on 5 November 1770. He and Lady Mary Hay were divorced in 1771
He married, secondly, Margaret Dundas, daughter of Rt. Hon. Robert Dundas of Arniston and Henrietta Carmichael.

John Scott 'entered Parliament in 1754 as Government candidate for Caithness, where his mother's relations had considerable interest."

General Scott was a large holder of stock in the East India Company.

Sir John Scott owned twin townhouses on the north side of Pall Mall, west of what was Almack's Tavern. (Nos. 50 & 51; No. 50 was later Boodles Club) St. James's district of London)

"[General Scott's] remains were interred in the churchyard of Kilrenny, where a magnificent monument was erected by his daughter, the Duchess of Portland, denotes his grave. The monument is uninscribed. General Scott was a noted gambler, and consequent on his success at play, became the owner of numerous estates. At the period of his death he was regarded as the wealthiest commoner in Scotland. Her succession is said to have availed his eldest daughter of 25,000 pounds a year."
