Biography

Richard Scott "of Glemsford, Suffolk, was a clothier and was probably born about 1510, presumably in Glemsford, where he lived and died. His first wife, Joanna, was buried 23 August 1556. Seven weeks later, on 8 October 1556, he and Joan Tollington (or Tollerton) were married. She was the widow of Christopher Tollerton of Cavendish, whose will, dated 12 May 1556, was proved 23 September following. She apparently had a still earlier marriage, for she had a son named Andrew James, according to Richard Scott's will. This was, no doubt, the Andrew who was bequeathed 40s. and a cow by Christopher Tollerton, no surname or relationship given. Richard Scott was buried on 5 February 1564/5. He was then designated as 'senior' to distinguish him from a younger Richard Scott also living in Glemsford -- a first cousin once removed. His widow, Joan, remarried 26 September 1565 to Thomas Hayward, apparently her fourth husband."[1]

With his first wife, Joanna, he had the following children:[2]

Richard's wife Joanna was buried 23 Aug 1556 in Glemsford. Richard then married Johan (maiden name unknown) Tollington, widow of Christopher, on 8 Oct 1556.[2]

Richard wrote a will in Feb 1565. It was proved 27 May 1565 in Glemsford, Suffolk, England. Records show that he was buried in Glemsford Feb 1565.[2]

Notes

In 1871, Martin B. Scott published an article in NYGBR giving a lineage for the Richard Scott who lived in Providence, Rhode Island, which included the Scotts of Scott Hall in county Kent, England. [3] In 1942, Richard LeBaron Bowen published in NEHGR giving credence to this theory and adding a coat of arms to the Providence family, based on a 1608 armorial pedigree roll.[4] Unfortunately, this armorial roll was fraudulent. Moriarty's corrections to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary repeats the spurious theory of the Scott family.[5]

Sir Anthony Wagner of Oxford published English Genealogy in which he showed that this lineage was incorrect and that Richard Scott of Providence was descended from the Scott family of Glemsford, Suffolk, England.[6] Henry Waters published a will of George Scott which clarified some of the family.[7] From these and from wills of the Scott family, Harold Porter constructed the more authoritative version we now have of the Scott family of Glemsford, Suffolk, England.[2] The biography below is largely based on Porter's construction, along with notes from Threlfall's Fifty GM Ancestors.[8]

Until we can confirm his parents, we've detached all of them from the parent fields, but retained links to them in the narrative.
