Thomas was born on August 18, 1816, the son of Thomas Scott and Jane Simpson[1]. He was baptized at St. Michael's, Hawkshead on September 15, 1816.[2]
He likely attended the local school, Hawkshead Grammar, on at least a part time basis. Although this area would be termed something of a backwater, they appear to have been keen on education. One historian that visited the county in 1754 commented that it was not uncommon to come across a shepherd that was conversant in Latin and Greek. A generation before the Scott children, William Wordsworth had attended Hawkshead Grammar. Colthouse, where the Scott family lived, was also the residence of Ann Tyson, who was William Wordsworth's landlady when he was at school.[3]
Thomas arrived in New York on board the George Washington out of Liverpool on the 15th of June 1833, together with his mother and seven of his eight siblings, to settle in Upper Canada. His father had presumably arrived previously.[4]
Thomas married Almira Boyer and by 1851 they were living in Norwich, Oxford County.[5] By 1861, the family had moved to Dereham.[6]
By 1871, Thomas was staying in Dereham on the farm of his nephew William Scott[7] while his wife Almira and the two youngest children were staying in a hotel.[8] In 1881, Thomas was listed at the farm of another nephew, Robert Scott, a cheese maker.[9] His wife Almira and youngest son Simpson were living in Tillsonburg at this time.[10]
