Thomas was born in 1781. He was baptized at St. Mary Magdalene, Broughton on June 7, 1781.[1]
He married Jane Simpson in 1812 at St. Mary's Ulverston.[2]
He was a tanner and the center of the leatherworking trade at that time was in the village of Hawkshead, so that is where he moved to after his wedding. Colthouse where Thomas and his family lived was (and remains to this day) a small collection of houses that are separated from the village of Hawkshead.
The 1829 Directory lists Thomas as a tanner in Hawkshead and living at Green End.[3] Modern maps still show Green End Cottage as part of the small cluster of buildings that make up Colthouse.
Thomas and Jane had nine children, all of them baptized at St. Michael's, Hawkshead. They all would also likely have attended the local school, Hawkshead Grammar, on at least a part time basis. Although this area would be termed something of a backwater, they appear to have been keen on education. One historian that visited the county in 1754 commented that it was not uncommon to come across a shepherd that was conversant in Latin and Greek. A generation before the Scott children, William Wordsworth had attended Hawkshead Grammar. Colt House, where the Scott family lived, was also the residence of Ann Tyson, who was William Wordsworth's landlady when he was at school.[4]
At some point after this, Thomas must have left his family in Lancashire and emigrated, settling in Dereham Township, Oxford County, Upper Canada. In the summer of 1833, his wife and eight of his nine children immigrated to Canada, with only Joseph remaining in England. By 1850, Joseph would also arrive in Dereham.
By 1851 only Anthony and Elizabeth were still living with Thomas and Jane.[5]
In 1850 Thomas would prepare his will. At the time he reported that he was "very sick and weak of body" but he would live for another fifteen years, dying in 1865.[6][7]
