Joseph was born in 1738.
Bonds were posted on September 3, 1766 by Joseph Scott, breeches maker, of Ulverston and Thomas Wilson, waller, of Broughton. Joseph Scott and Ellenor Wilson were married on September 5, 1766 at St. Mary, Ulverston, Lancashire, England.
Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to nearby Broughton in Furness. Broughton at this period was a market town and the center for the wool trade in that part of the country. Starting the following year, all six of their children would be born there and baptized at St. Mary Magdalene, Broughton.
Joseph and his family lived at the Square in Broughton. The Square was a brand new development in the 1760's when the Scott's moved in. It is still there, as the photos at the right will attest.
One of the problems that may have been faced by newcomers like the Scott's was a lack of access to grazing rights that would be held by the longtime residents. Possibly as a result of this, in 1785, Joseph Scott was fined 39 shillings for putting horses on the common without permission.
