Biography

Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Anthony Scott was born in Lancashire, England.

Anthony was born in 1771. He is the son of Joseph Scott and Eleanor Wilson. He was baptized at St. Mary Magdalene, Broughton on May 5, 1771.[1]

In 1801 he married Agnes Simpson in Orton, Westmoreland.[2] Their first two children were born in Hawkshead, where he was listed as a field farmer.[3][4] The rest of his children were born back in Broughton, where he was listed as an innkeeper.[5][6]

His youngest son, John only lived to four years old, dying in 1819. By then the family had moved back to the Hawkshead area, settling at Bowmanstead Cottage in Coniston.[7]

He was buried in Hawkshead on September 14, 1832. His abode at the time was listed as Hannakin.[8] Hannakin is now a Bed & Breakfast just south of Hawkshead, close by St. Michael's where his first two girls were baptized.
A newspaper at the time reported on the melancholy death on Tuesday last of William Scott a carrier between Kendal and Hawkshead. He was found dead in the road near Crook Chapel, thought to have been affected by liquor and fallen off the front of the cart and pitched on his head and died instantly, aged between 60 and 70.[9] Although Anthony's son William was indeed a carrier on this route at this time, this can only be referring to Anthony.[10]
