Biography

Notables Project
James (Scott) Scott XIIth of Balwearie is Notable.
James (Scott) Scott XIIth of Balwearie is a member of Clan Scott.

James was the son of William Scott and Janet Lindsay.[1][2]

He married Elizabeth Wardlaw[1] on 22 Jun 1583.[3] They had issue:

  1. William, heir apparent[1][4] Predeceased his father leaving a son:
    1. Walter, d. unm. in Flanders[4]
  2. James[1][4]
  3. Janet, m. Sir John Bosswell of Balmuto[1]

Sir John Boswell of Balmuto who was Knighted with his brother, George, by King James VI at the baptism of Prince Henry at Stirling, August 1594. He married Janet, daughter of Sir James Scott of Balineary by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Andrew Wardlaw of Torrie. This Sir James Scott was the fourteenth in unbroken descent from Sir Michael Scott who flourished in the reign of King William the Lion from 1165 and the 9th in descent from Sir Michael Scott whose travels and knowledge was far in advance of his time, a short account of whom appears in the following chapter under the heading "Great Scott". This Sir James Scott had the honour of Knighthood conferred upon him by King James VI at the ceremony of Queen Anne's coronation 1590[2]. He was engaged with the Earls of Angus, Errol, Huntley,7 and others who did not come so early into the reformation of religion and were with him at the battle of Glenlivet, 1594, but he soon thereafter obtained a remission under the great seal from King James VI, 1595. He was also one of the accomplices of the Earl of Bothwell which in a great measure ruined his family. Douglas says in his baronage of Scotland "that there is no family in Scotland of this surname that can justly claim a higher antiquity than that of Balwearie". [5]

James died in 1606 in Ardross, Elie, Fifeshire, Scotland Age: 47-48[citation needed]

James was born about 1530. He passed away about 1590.
NOTE: Birth and death dates are rough estimates based upon the generation of 25-30 years, and not accurate.
David Graham, sixth of Fintry, married Barbara, daughter of Sir James Scott, of Balwearie, (lineal descendant of the celebrated Sir Michael Scott) and had two sons,
David, his heir.
James, who possessed the lands of Monorgan and Craigo.[6]

I see that his marriage to Elizabeth Wardlaw is cited as his first, but if the marriage dates are correct, then he was married first to Agnes Dalgleish. If anyone had solid evidence for the marriage order being as cited, then the dates must be wrong, and vice versa. If Agnes was the first wife, then you would expect her son James to be the heir. More research or evidence needed to clarify this.

Scott-16619 and Scott-2494 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Both profiles have Wardlaw-9 as spouse.

The profile of Barbara (Scott) Graham, daughter of Scott-16619, calls the father "Sir James Scott of Balwearie 12th of Balwearie". This name is used on the profile of Scott-2494.

Scott-38558 and Scott-2494 appear to represent the same person because: Clear Duplicate. Sorry I created this, but Wikitree didn't flag up the match.

He was added as son of the wrong William, see the info this William Scott, will correct his father, and look if there's a profile for his mother.

Update corrected his parents now, removed info that wasn't relating to him and added it to the correct profile (this one's grandfather William)

There is something incorrect in this lineage, the mother would have been 68 when he was born. And it does not appear that the profiles are in the same relationships as the biographies indicate.

Please accept my personal thanks for your contributions of precious time and effort to WikiTree. Since we are a collaborative effort, your participation is an absolute necessity. In the order of things there is an even flow from child to parent to grandparent, theoretically back to Adam and Eve. Our computers do the heavy lifting but they depend on certain data. Of course the key ingredient is Last Name at Birth (LNAB). The computer then looks for a date of birth (DOB) and date of death (DOD). In this particular case, both are missing. A data-sort is non-productive. Would you please take a moment and add a birth or death date, even if it's only an estimate? The web-gurus will love you.
