Biography

James was born at Limehouse St Anne, London, son of James Scott and Jane Lackington, who had married at St Pancras Chapel, Camden, London, in 1816. He was their second child.

James married Elizabeth Clarkson in Lyttelton, New Zealand in 1857. [1] He was working for H.M. Customs in Lyttelton at the time.

James may also have been a sailmaker. This 1858 advertisement may have been placed by him:

JAMES SCOTT BEGS respectfully to inform the inhabitants of Canterbury, that he is prepared to make rick cloths, tarpaulins, & c. on reasonable terms. Orders left at the office of the 'Canterbury Standard,' or at his residence, Oxford Street, Lyttelton, will be punctually attended to.

[2]

The death of a James Scott in Lyttelton in 1881, seems to be the best match, and it from this that we get his estimated birth date:

DEATHS. Scott. At Lyttelton, on March 28, James Scott. aged 63.

It is likely James was buried in the Anglican Cemetery in Lyttelton.

Research Notes

  • This James Scott, who died 28 March 1881 in Lyttelton, aged 63, would have been aged 39 at the time of his marriage. He is the basis for the dates of birth and death used in his profile. Death record on order May 2023.
