Biography

Sergeant Gardner Scriven served in the United States Civil War.
Side: USA

Civil War Veteran, Physician

Gardner Scriven fought in the Civil War. He is listed as an acting Sgt. eligible for a pension in United States Civil War and Later Pension Index that took effect on 26 December 1879. [1]

Husband of 1. Mary Virginia Nutt, married 5 September 1862 in Jackson, Ohio

Gardner Scriven is first listed on the 1830 US Census for Petersburgh, New York.

He is listed as having attended Union College U.S., (College Student Lists, 1763-1924 for Gardner R Scriven, published in 1895 and U.S., School Catalogs, 1765-1935 New York Union College, 1846, where he was listed as a sophomore)

In the US Census of 1840, there is a listing for G. B. Scrivner, along with W. S. Scrivner in Burlington Township, Licking, Ohio. [2] This may or may not be G. R. Scriven. G. B. is in his thirties with 2 children under 5 and W. S in his forties with one child under 5.

For the US Census of 1850, Gardner, then 27, was listed as a merchant, still living with his parents, Zebulon and Waity Scrivens in Petersburgh, New York. [3]

On July 31, 1857 (possibly 1854, depending on how you read the last hand-written digit), Gardner filed a US Passport request to go to Europe on a steamer [4]

He seems to have moved to Ohio sometime before the 1860's. There, he was married September 4, 1862, to Mary Virginia Nutt in Jackson, Ohio. [5] The 1870 Census says Mary was born in Pennsylvania.

By the 1870 US Census, Gardner is living in Hamilton, Ohio with his wife Mary V. (27), and his son, Ottis H. (6). He was listed as a physician, like his younger brother, Zebulon W. Scriven. Since he was still listed as a merchant at age 27 in the 1850 Census, you wonder if Gardner went back to medical school or "acquired" the medical skills from his brother. (We do know that his brother Zebulon went to Albany Medical School.)

He died in 1887, according to OHIO DEATHS AND BURIALS, 1854-1997 [6]

By the 1880 US Census, he had returned to New York State, now living in New York City, listed at 71 years old with a second wife, Nancy (52) (or maybe, since Nancy is 19 years younger, this is an incorrect listing, and she's really his daughter.) [7]

(Not to be confused with Gardner Scriven Scriven-782, son of Joshua and Permelia Scriven, Jr.)
