The Gazetteer and Business Directory of Rensselaer Co. for 1870-71 lists him as"a maker of shirts and farmer" of 30 years old. (But based on the birthdate, this sounds like it refers to a son of this Danial L.) Brothers John H. and Alvah Scriven were part of Scriven Brothers, general merchants and shirtmakers of Grafton, NY. Caleb Scriven started the shirt business when he brought the first sewing machine to Grafton.
The 1850 US Census lists Daniel and his wife, Catherine.
The 1875 New York, State Censusfor Daniel L Scriven lists him as a 66 year old shirt maker, and his wife, Mary, at 57. He also had a 23 year old son, Edwin Clark, living with them (Mary's boy by another marriage?)
Basic data from FamilySearch.org record for mother, Nancy Lewis Scriven.
