Susan Scriven's life was beset with tragedy.
In an article on her wedding and short life thereafter, it says that Susie's mother died when she was five years old, a year after the family had moved to Missouri. She was raised by Judge William Linder and his wife, Jane.
Since Susan was under the age of 18, her father Joseph had to give permission for her to marry David F. Dean, who was over 21. The marriage occurred on Mar 15, 1896, so she was almost of age.
After her husband had traveled to Cloud Chief, Oklahoma by covered wagon, Susan traveled there in the summer of 1899 to meet him by train, along with her two daughters, Chloe, and infant, and Oma, 2. She became sick with typhoid fever and died Nov. 9, 1899. Her mother-in-law had arrived a few days before, and presumably, helped her son Frank take care of the children.
