Buckingham Co., VA Will of James Scruggs. In the name of God Amen I James Scruggs of Buckingham County, being sick in body, but of sound and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God do make, ordain and appoint this my last will and testament revoking all others heretofore by me in manner and form following, constituting and appointing my son Allen Cruggs my executor of this my will and testament. First, I give unto my dear loving wife Hannah Scruggs everything of my estate during life in peaceable possession. Secondly, I give and bequeath to my son Allen Scruggs four negroes Viz. Solomon, Phillis Lurany and old Dianna to him and his heirs forever. 3rd. I give and bequeath to my grandson Gross Scruggs ( son of Valentine Scruggs) one negro boy by the name of Ben, to him and his heirs forever. Fourthly - I lend to my grandson Finch Scruggs ( son of William Scruggs) one negro girl by the name of Jammima during his natural life, and then to his two children Polly and William. Fifthly - I lend to my grandaughter Elizabeth Scruggs two negroes Viz> Jane and little Diannah during her natural life and then her heirs lawfully begotten of her body, and if she should decease without lawful heirs, then the aforesaid negroes and their increase to be equally divided between Nahaley Scruggs, daughter of Valentine Scruggs and Polly Scruggs daughter of Allen Scruggs. Sixthly, I give and bequeath to my grandson James Scruggs son of Allen Scruggs one negro boy named Moses to him and his heirs forever. 7thly, I give and bequeath to my son William Scruggs one negro girl by the name of Hannah to him and his heirs forever. Eightly, I give to my son Valentine Scruggs two negroes Viz. Caroline and Jesse to him and his heirs forever. All the residue of My estate be it of whatever nature or kind whatsoever, after my debts and funeral expenses is discharged, I leave to be equally divided amoungst my said three children, Signed, sealed, published and declared this sixteenth day of July one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight. his James J.
