Served with the 4th TN Cavalry ( CSA) in the Civil War. He was wounded and was a POW. In 1872 he bought 220 acres of land on Caney Creek. In 1874, he married Delia Avant. Buried in Gordonsville Cemetary.
In The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires, Volume Five Confederate Soldiers (Rainey - Young), Robert L. Scruggs provides the following information: Confederate soldier, Company C; 4 Tenn. Cav.; Enlisted May 1861 at Carthage Smith Co. Tenn.; Company sent first to Camp Myer Overton County; First battle December 1861, Fishing Creek; "After first battle went to Nashville in camps 2 months then to Shiloh. Was in the following battles Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, New Hope Church, Atlanta, in fact we fought most every day from Shiloh to Benton, North Carolina. Wounded 3 times serious was in hospital also in prison one time"; Discharged "From hospital in Macon, Ga. May 1865"; Trip home: "had hard time getting home without taking oath but made it through the account is too detailed for this space." "Came home out of war began farming have farmed every since have lived in Smith County Tenn. every since belong to M.E. church South was Trustee of Smith County from 1872 and 1873." At the opening of the war, he had "No land had about $1000 property." Parents owned no slaves Parents owned no land Value of property owned by parents when the war opened: "About $1500 personal property." Parents occupied log house with 3 rooms As a boy and young man, "Worked on farm did all kinds of work that has to be done on farm." Attended "Public schools sometimes free sometimes subscription" "About 3 months per year until 17 or 18 years of age"; school was about 1 1/2 miles away.
