Others say his middle name was Hackett, but we believe that it was Hochet despite the certain spelling of his son's middle name

Death certificate of Nancy Ann Shores Woodfin from Powhatan Co. Vir-
ginia gave the names of Edward and Polly Scruggs as the parents.
Probate records of Cumberland Co., Virginia for Phineas Thomas. Nathaniel
Hochet and Nancy Anne Shores Scruggs were listed as the grandchildren of Phineas and Anne Thomas in the will of Phineas Thomas probated 1 June 1807. In the settlement of the estate John Woodfin is named as the spouse of Nancy Anne.
Marriage records of Cumberland Co., Virginia give the marriage dates of
Nathaniel and Martha.
Land records of Jackson Co., Missouri; Deed Books A,B & C; page 23; FHL # 928082. Daniel King and Betsey his wife sell 80 acres in Sec. 17, twp. 49, R. 33 to Nathaniel H. Scruggs. (p. 44)

County Judge in 1862. Helped run the county.
Residence: Moved into house at 302 W. Mill St. in Indpendence, Missouri in 1857 and lived there until his death in 1864. House was not sold until 1872 when the estate was settled. Mary Lou Zimmerman and her husband restored the house and it is now occupied by Dawn Coary; 302 W. Mill St.; Independence, MO 64050; 816-254-5701.

This was an inventory of his land after his death. One piece of land was in the Lewis addition in Town 49 on the Northwest corner of Lot # 32 on Spring Street. It was the same land deeded by one Nahum C. Roswell to James H. Meador on 24 Dec. 1851. Another 300 acres were jointly owned with John Wilson and was in Town 50.
Cemetery records - A copy of the tombstone inscriptions of Nathaniel H.
Scruggs, Union Cemetary, Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri give the death date.
Probate records of Nathaniel H. Scruggs from Jackson Co., Missouri, and a
copy of the settlement of the estate. Estate was not settled until 1872.
Probate records of Phineas Thomas Cumberland Co. Virginia dated 1 June 1805
gave the names of her two children. Grandmother Ann Thomas was named the legal guardian of the children so I assume that Mary is deceased. Edward is listed as one of the executors of the estate.
